Alhaji Ibrahim Haruna Constitutes and Inaugurates Committee on Iyara Cattle Market Review – Charges Members on Commitment Towards Standardization for Sustainable Peace and Security
The Executive Chairman of Ijumu Local Government, Alhaji Ibrahim Haruna, on Thursday, 27th March, inaugurated a 21-member Committee tasked with reviewing the operations of the Iyara Cattle Market. The Committee comprises representatives from security agencies, the Ijumu Local Government Authority, the Ijumu Traditional Council, the Iyara community, and the leadership of the Iyara Cattle Market.
The Committee is charged with reviewing and reforming cattle market operations, focusing on market standardization by establishing clear guidelines for fair and regulated trade, enhancing security and peace within the market, improving operational efficiency for better management, and strengthening relationships between traders, local authorities, and the host community.
Additionally, the Committee is tasked with identifying areas of conflict between the people of the cattle market and the people of Ijumu, investigating the sale of land, particularly claims made by the Fulani community, and examining any original agreements they claim to have, regarding land or market operations.
It will also assess the issue of burial grounds within the market, including the burial of Fulani individuals who are not residents of Iyara, review the work of market committees and the composition of the market’s leadership structure, and examine the presence of residential buildings inside and around the market, as well as the status of the market’s perimeter fencing.
Furthermore, the Committee is to submit a detailed report of its findings to the Chief Security Officer of the Local Government and also to allow the general public to submit memoranda for advisory purposes in the planning and regulation of the market if necessary. The note period of work for the Committee will be communicated in due course.
