OKUN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION, KOGI STATE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION TECHNICAL, MOPA, HOSTS END-OF-YEAR PARTY IN KABBA
The Okun Community Association of Kogi State College of Education Technical, Mopa, marked the end of the year with a Grand Celebration on December 15, 2024, in Kabba. The event was a vibrant gathering, drawing important dignitaries from across Okun land who graced the occasion with their presence. The program served as a platform to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Okun people while fostering unity among its members.
The Provost of the College, Dr. Victoria Olusola Jagboro, set the tone for the celebration with her inspirational address. She emphasized the importance of unity among Okun staff and community members, urging them to work together for the development of Okun land. Her words resonated with the audience, reflecting the theme of togetherness that defined the event.
The President – Mr Oloba Joseph, and the Secretary General – Prince Hamza Bola Sanusi likewise Pastor Hallelulah and Mr Adeyemo spoke eloquently and vigorously on the importance of Okun Unity and Progress
One of the standout contributors, Mrs. Teresa Osaya, delivered a thought-provoking speech on the linguistic and cultural identity of the Okun people. She noted that Okun communities speak diverse Yoruba dialects such as Ikiri, Owé, Ìyàgbà, Addé, Bùnú, and Ọwọrọ, which are largely mutually intelligible. Mrs. Osaya highlighted recent efforts to standardize these dialects, including the remarkable achievement of the Okun Bible, translated and published by the Bible Society of Nigeria in 2022.
Mrs. Adeyemi Aderinsola, another notable speaker, delved into the shared traditions and lifestyles of the Okun people. She spoke on their farming and hunting practices, the vibrant textile trade led by Abunu women, and the shared love for cultural cuisines. She also listed some of the community’s popular dishes, including ora soup, akuku, and tankelekon soup, often enjoyed with pounded yam, as well as the beloved snack adun (fried beans with palm oil and sugar). Her presentation painted a vivid picture of the richness and diversity of Okun culture.
The event featured captivating cultural displays, including traditional dances, and a showcase of Okun delicacies. Attendees reveled in the festive atmosphere, reconnecting with their roots and celebrating the end of a successful year. The array of local dishes and cultural exhibitions added a special touch to the celebration.
