Environment: Kogi Commissioner For Environment Engr. Joseph Leads Sanitation From New Market To Old Market In State Capital, Says Ministry Won’t Tolerate Dumping Of Refuse In Drainages
Insist On No Compromise To Clean And Healthy Environment
In the early hours of Tuesday morning, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Ecological Management, Engr. Joseph Olusegun has matched words with actions by leading some departs and agencies of the ministry which include the Sanitation Department, Environmental Department, Kogi State Environmental Protection Board(KOSEP) and Kogi State Sanitation and Waste Management Board(KSSWMB) in carrying out a thorough sanitation exercise starting from Old market to new market in Lokoja, the Kogi State Capital.
Together with the commissioner is Dr. Jibril Saidu, the permanent secretary of the ministry who also joined in the environmental cleaning and general sanitation exercise.
The team ensured all waste dumped at various points on the road divider were cleared off, leaving the road divider clean and hygienic. It also ensured that drainages were cleared.
The ministry through the commissioner issues out warning to all those who violates the waste management law by dumping refuses any how without following due process thereby causing unnecessary environmental hazards and leaving the environment unhealthy and unhygienic to live in.
Engr. Joseph stressed on the importance of managing a healthy environment for everyone. He revealed that diseases and other forms of germs, bacterias finds comfort in untidy and unkept environment and this in turn threatens the state of healthiness of our children and even adults, hence, productivity is threatened through ill health.
He appealed to both market men and women, road users and the general public to encourage hygienic living through manners that promote healthy environment, stressing that the importance of this cannot be underrated.
He noted that the governor Ododo’s administration through the ministry of environment and ecological management will not condone any form of waste disposal into drainages both within and outside the state capital. He established that one of the major causes of erosion include and is not limited to blockage of drainage and sewage lines with waste which stops easy flow of water. In a situation like this, such an environment becomes prone to pollution of any sort and unhealthy for the habitat therein.
He insist that there is no iota of compromise to a hygienic and healthy environment, reiterating that violators of the sanitation laws won’t be spared when found guilty.
