THE GIANT STRIDES OF FUL’s VICE CHANCELLOR PROF. OLAYEMI DUROTIMI AKINWUMI.
On the 20th December, 2020 there was an announcement by the Governing Council of the FUL of the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor, Professor Akinwumi. With this appointment, the Federal University Lokoja is fortunate to have an exceptional leader that has the desire of performing creditably for the development of education in the institution.
Professor Akinwumi on assumption had the vision and mission to turn around the fortunes of the already divided university with factions to an enviable height and make it one of the best among the citadels of learning both in Nigeria and the international community.
With the vast experience in university system, Prof. Akinwumi within a short period in office brought up a lot of innovations. The achievements recorded within the space of time has earned him recognition accolades and positioned the university on the global map of excellent citadel of learning.
Some notable achievements of Prof. Akinwumi within the period of one year and a month include physical transformation and expansion, academic development and social cohesion.
On physical transformation and expansion, Prof. Akinwumi has opened the Permanent Site of the university at Felele and commenced academic activities. The esterblishment of staff school for staff children and building of structures and infrastructure that have positive impacts on staff and students.
Academically, Prof. Akinwumi has put in ground work for the esterblishment of Faculty of engineering and medical college and appointed indigenes of the state to chair the committee for the smooth take off of the programmes.
Prof. Akinwumi has also carried out the institutionalisation of the academic traditions where over six Proffesors have delivered their inaugural lectures as against two for over ten years before his appointment.
He has also facilitated the upward review and approval of students admission quota from 1500 to 4,000.
In his quest for higher academic standards, Prof. Akinwumi has been able to move the institution from eight among twelve universities estarblished in 2012 to number one position and from 78 to 35th in Nigeria.
Prof. Akinwumi while striving to increase and improve existing faculty has also approved Academic Staff Training and Development for foreign study fellowship for staff in various departments through TETFund to pursue Ph. D and Master courses.
In the area of social cohesion, on resumption the university was factionalized on tribal sections, but for the administrative sagacity of the Vice Chancellor, he has been able to unite the various factions to create an enabling environment for peace and development of the institution. His administrative experience is also helping to synergizing between Government, host communities and the institution.
The Vice Chancellor’s desire for the security of lives of staff, students and the properties of the university is yielding results with the recruitment of over sixty hunters to support the security architectutes of the university.
The Vice-Chancellor who recently celebrated his 58th birthday on 20th January 2022 received much accolades for his exceptional, amazing and incredible leadership qualities, we celebrate you on your feat for our great citadel of learning.
We thank the Executive Governor for supporting such a young erudite scholar to be recommended for the appointment and also appreciate the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for approving his appointment as the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Lokoja.
