Today, the Folorunsho Olafemi Foundation – FOF donated food items across the 3 Local Government Areas in Yagba Federal Constituency to cushion the impact of *‘Stay At Home’*
Speaking to the founder Engr. Folorunsho Olafemi via teleconference he said:
“The COVID-19 outbreak in Nigeria has put a spotlight on economic inequalities and a fragile social safety net that leaves vulnerable communities to bear the economic brunt of the crisis, We all will need to consider these underlying inequalities by responding urgently to the mounting challenges of the pandemic, especially, to the poor and less privileged in our communities.
There are two major actors involved in tackling the challenge of poverty: private businesses and government. Unfortunately, both actors have tend to view each other through the lens of negative stereotypes, and each actor (or its proponents) dismisses the contributions of the other player and minimises its role.”
Engr. Olafemi added that while the virus infects people regardless of wealth, the poor will be most affected due to longstanding segregation by income, reduced economic mobility, and the high cost of medical care. Low-income (or no income) communities will most likely be exposed to the virus, have higher mortality rates, and suffer economically. In times of economic crisis like are now, these vulnerabilities will be more pronounced.
He also noted that the above are the reasons the foundation is calling on all and sundries to reach out to as many as they practically can. We cannot leave this to the government or office holders alone.
It’s a time for us all to roll our sleeves.
